Hair bulb

The hair bulb is the thickened lower end of the hair root and is located deep in the dermis or subcutis. It forms the central growth region of the hair and surrounds the dermal papilla. The bulb contains highly active matrix cells that continuously divide and produce new keratinocytes, which build up the hair shaft. This area also contains melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin and pass it on to the matrix cells. This means that the hair bulb not only produces the material for the hair, but also determines its natural color.

The hair bulb is therefore the actual “production site” of the hair: this is where growth, structure, and color are determined. At the same time, it is a particularly sensitive area, as any damage to the matrix cells or the surrounding papilla has a direct impact on hair regrowth.

The hair bulb plays a crucial role in laser hair removal. Since most of the melanin is concentrated here and the matrix cells are closely connected to the dermal papilla, this area is the main target structure for treatment. The absorbed light energy is converted into heat and specifically destroys the matrix and papilla. As a result, the bulb loses its ability to produce new hair, and growth at this site is permanently inhibited.
