Sclerotherapy, also known as sclerotherapy or sclerotherapy, is a medical method for closing pathologically altered veins. It is used, for example, for varicose veins (varices) of the legs, oesophagus or anus (haemorrhoids). A substance is injected into the affected vessel, which causes local inflammation of the vessel wall. This causes the walls to fuse together and the vein to close.

Sclerotherapy enables the treatment of vessels of different sizes. Varicose veins and spider veins can be removed without scars using sclerotherapy.
There are two main types of sclerotherapy: liquid and foam sclerotherapy. The choice of therapy mainly depends on the size and position of the existing spider veins and varicose veins.
However, both sclerotherapy methods follow the same principle: the diseased vessels are pierced with fine needles. A sclerosing agent is then injected, which stimulates the inner vein wall, the “intima”. The treated vessels are broken down by the body within weeks after they have been glued and sealed from the inside.
Although there are no scars, there may occasionally be discoloration at the injection site. It is often necessary to repeat the treatment several times. In addition, statutory health insurance companies do not normally pay for sclerotherapy, which means that the costs for the patient amount to several hundred euros.
Both sclerotherapy and laser are minimally invasive treatment methods that do not require surgical intervention and are therefore less stressful for patients. However, the efficacy, range of applications, effectiveness, study situation and costs of these two treatment methods are significantly different.
A special device for spider vein removal is used to send high-energy laser beams through the skin to the altered vessels during laser treatment. There they heat the blood so intensively that the vein walls are potentially irreversibly damaged and the spider veins disintegrate after several weeks. To completely remove individual spider veins, several sections usually need to be lasered.
