How does a heel spur develop?
A heel spur is a bony outgrowth on the heel bone, which is usually caused by chronic overloading of the plantar fascia – the tendon plate on the sole of the foot. People who stand for long periods, are overweight or have an unfavorable foot position are particularly frequently affected. The result: inflammation, swelling and severe, stabbing pain under the heel, especially after periods of rest or in the morning.
Botox as a new treatment option
Botox is primarily known for its use in aesthetic medicine – but the neurotoxin also has great therapeutic potential. For heel spur complaints, botulinum toxin is injected specifically into the overactive muscles that contribute to the development of the pain through permanent tension and incorrect strain. Temporary muscle relaxation reduces the tension on the plantar fascia and the inflammatory process can subside.
Advantages of Botox treatment:
Pain relief without surgery or long downtime
Minimally invasive and well tolerated
Often noticeable improvement within a few days to weeks
Can be combined with other therapies such as insoles or shock waves
