What does cryolipolysis mean?

The term cryolipolysis comes from the ancient Greek words kryo (for frost) and lipa (for fat) and lysis (for dissolution). Literally translated, it is the treatment of fat with the help of frost or cold temperatures. Cryolipolysis, CoolSculpting, cryotherapy or cryolysis; many terms for fat treatment with cooling.

What is the procedure of cryolipolysis?

At the beginning of every cryolipolysis in Berlin there is a detailed consultation. In the next step, the areas to be treated are marked with a pen. Afterwards, a gentle treatment with an applicator takes place, which treats the fatty tissue effectively. The treatment is performed with a gentle vacuum created between two cooling panels. The temperature reaches minus degrees, which are kept constant. Of course, the skin is treated with special gel beforehand, which creates a protective film. In addition, the device is covered with a special coating that prevents frostbite of the skin. The duration of a treatment is about 40 minutes. Afterwards, you can go back to your usual work. Cryolipolysis is painless and non-invasive in all treatment steps. During the treatment you can read, watch a film or do other sedentary work without any problems.

What side effects can occur?

The great popularity of cryolipolysis also results from the fact that there are few side effects. It should be noted, however, that no blood thinners such as aspirin or Marcumar should be taken one week before the treatment. In addition, cryolipolysis can be somewhat more unpleasant during menstruation. Due to the fact that a vacuum is created during cryolipolysis, the skin may suffer from tension in some cases. It is also understandable to expect a temporary feeling of coldness around the treated areas. From a medical point of view, the fat cells become inflamed, so that the treatment should only be carried out if the patient does not suffer from any illnesses. Occasional side effects include bruising, skin irritation or mild numbness. You should not take any anti-inflammatory drugs such as Voltaren or Ibuprofen for about four weeks after the treatment, as these can weaken the effect of cryolipolysis. In case of pain, however, paracetamol – after consulting a doctor – is safe.

How often does cryolipolysis have to be applied?

As with all other treatments, the frequency of cryolipolysis depends on the amount of fat present. As a rule, at least two or three appointments within a time interval of one month should be assumed. The desired effect occurs after eight to 16 weeks.

What are the limits of cryolipolysis?

Fat treatment with the cryolipolysis method is a proven procedure for the treatment of fatty tissue. Stretch marks cannot be treated with cold, as these are problems with a weakening connective tissue.
